What are birth Affirmations? And how to use them.

Many of us are familiar with the difficult parts of pregnancy and birth. Morning sickness, pain, fatigue, anxiety, doubt … the list goes on. You get it.

And alongside all of the difficulty, there is a whole world of power and beauty in birth that I don’t think is nearly as recognized. The parts you feel lucky to experience! The joy, awe, increased meaning, deep relationship with your body, and pride in your ability to grow and create.

I can’t think of a better word to describe pregnancy and birth than POWERFUL. The birth of my son was the most transformative experience of my life - there was before, and then there was after.

Who I was and what I believed I could do completely expanded. It really was powerful.

What are birth affirmations?

This is one of the reasons why I LOVE birth affirmations. They are essentially short, empowering statements to remind you that you are capable! They are like little statements to support and encourage you through pregnancy and labor.

These affirmations are incredibly powerful, especially when we use them regularly. The empowering phrases start to come to mind easily, and can really come through when you need it. I also love giving birth affirmations to partners that are supporting during the birth - it can give them a way to really know what to say.

As you prepare for birth, explore some birth affirmations that feel good to you. Write them down, say them out loud, and allow them to infuse your mind and body with a sense of calm and empowerment. Trust in the wisdom of your body and the power of your spirit, knowing that you are capable of birthing your baby with strength, courage, and love.

I created my birth affirmation deck, In Full Bloom. Birth affirmations help you to tap into your innate power and capability in birth and pregnancy. Whatever type of birth you’re preparing for, they can be an invaluable tool to help you navigate the challenges of childbirth with confidence.

How do you use birth affirmations?

There are infinite ways to use them! Some ideas …

  • Draw a card each morning and night throughout your pregnancy as you check in with yourself and your baby

  • Hang them up in your home! On the mirror, on the wall, on your bedside table.

  • Take a photo of your favorite card at set it as your phone wallpaper

  • Decorate your birth space with them

  • Have your birthing parter read repeat your favorites when you’re in the thick of it.

This photo was shared to me from doula Natalia Marie who’s client used the deck through her birth.
